Either Google is receiving money from some web-sites to appear on top of search engine results, or some web-sites have learned quite well how to cheat Google algorithm.

the two of them are correct, u can pay google to advertise ur site or u can make ur content very good I suppose that 242 is the person who post this, but yet I can't understand what the problem is. If I google website directory I am not understanding what a website directory is, and am expecting Google returning me a Wikipedia site or something. Sorry but I can't see any problems there.use bing.... you'll feel better... everything will be OK. The secrets of web-design sometimes reside with programmers who determine that users can only get nominal or better rankings by paying money, like a monthly fee at yahoo small business (I am still a sucker on that count) Some webmasters do beat Google algorithms from time to time. However, Google keeps getting better and better in fixing and improving its algorithms. For example, when I do search for 'website directory' almost every other web-site has relatively low page rank of 3,4, or 5, considering that it is a very competitive phrase returning half a billion of results. These suspicious links are supposed to be the best web-site directories, and yet, most of them have almost no links in their directory! Also, almost all of them have a fee based inclusion. That is very strange! Usually Google does give very good results.
