Yes they are, but not in every country. There are conditions that exist in many nations that lead to the idolization of the athletes by masses of people, which in turn leads to them being "overpaid". Are professional doctors overpaid? Actors? Musicians?

In every profession there are extremely successful individuals, but not all people within a profession are overpaid, maybe only few of them. Professional athletes are overpaid.
