What is an instinct?

Instinctive behaviors are automatic and irresistible, and which cannot be modified. Instincts can refer to biological or psychological behaviors. In biology, a number of simple reflexes is considered instinctive. Repetitive behaviors which do not require thought may be regarded as instinctive in psychology.

Behavior can also be described as instinctive by the motivation that guides it -- life instincts, survival instinct, sexual instincts... What is an instinct?
