it's not evolution. Evolution is a change in gene frequency across generations.
It's usually seen in invertebrates and is a growth phase where the animal develops the ability to reproduce.
the early stages are devoted to feeding while the adult stages usually involve reproduction only.
May flies use this to their advantage. they all mature in the same 2 day period which oversaturates their population. They all mate at once which decreases the chance of predators eating them all.
