Is it impolite to speak a foreign language in the workplace, and in public?

Any language is fine. There are no 'foreign' languages. Being 'impolite' is such a vague term anyhow and means something different to everyone. It would depend on the context or place where you are speaking. As a bilingual speaker, I would recommend that the most polite thing to do would be to speak a language that most people understand to prevent awkward and uncomfortable situation specially on small quarters (like elevators). Most monolingual speakers tend to feel alienated, or they may even think that you're gossiping about them. In conclusion, to prevent uncomfortable situations, speak a language that most people understand. Only if they speak about you as it is equivalent as if they spoke behind your back which is impolite as well. Otherwise, I don't see why it would be impolite - I actually like hearing other languages. I think that different is good. Is it impolite to speak a foreign language in the workplace, and in public?
